Mental Health Mentorship

Under our Mental Health Mentorship Program, FOMCAM proudly serves as the Mental Health Specialist and Technical Advisor to the Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) Cluster in Cameroon, a role designated by UNICEF. Through this appointment, we support the national coordination of child protection efforts by training and providing technical guidance to humanitarian actors across over 80 civil society organisations (CSOs) and NGOs. Our work focuses on strengthening trauma-informed care approaches and improving the quality of psychosocial support for children and families affected by crisis.

As part of our ongoing mentorship efforts, FOMCAM is currently guiding 40 national and community-based organizations in the integration of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and Mental Health and Social Protection (MSP) into key humanitarian response sectors. These include Gender-Based Violence (GBV), health, education, protection, child protection, WASH, and nutrition. This initiative is implemented with technical and financial support from the World Health Organization (WHO), aiming to ensure that MHPSS becomes a cross-cutting priority across all emergency response interventions.

We work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health to build sustainable mental health systems by training medical personnel in trauma-informed psychiatric care, physiotherapy, and psychosocial support. Our mentorship extends to health facilities where we support the capacity development of psychiatric nurses, case managers, social workers, and community health workers in delivering ethical and culturally sensitive mental health care.

As part of our long-term commitment to building professional capacity, FOMCAM also delivers quarterly cohort-based professional training programs in Psychosocial Support (PSS), Clinical Counselling, Psychological First Aid (PFA), and advanced mental health practice. These trainings have attracted over 160 fellows from diverse countries, including the United States, Germany, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Cameroon, the United Kingdom, and Canada, highlighting our growing global reach.

Our work in mental health mentorship and humanitarian capacity building has received recognition from key UN agencies and international organisations, including UNICEF, UNFPA, IOM, WHO, INTERSOS, and Street Child UK. Through these collaborations, FOMCAM continues to champion community-centred mental health care and ensure that vulnerable populations have access to timely, quality, and dignified support in times of crisis.
