AUGUST & SEPTEMBER 2016
Family Outreach Ministry Cameroon (FOMCAM)
P.O. Box 939, Mankon Bamenda, North West Region, Cameroon
Introduction
In July and August 2015, the Family Outreach Ministry Cameroon (FOMCAM) carried out a monographic studies and strategic plan elaboration for Kimbi village. From the problem analysis, all the sectors were affected, resulting to High dependency, inadequate education on health care, high cost of medical services, unaffordable health services for poorer members, high mortality rate, low participation in social activities, increased crime wave, increased unemployment, high dependency on local farming system and low standard of artisanal skills, Increased unemployment, rural/urban exodus, low educational levels of many community members, increased water contamination, water shortages, loss of biodiversity and increased climate change effect and low crop yields.
Given that the above stated core problems have not been resolved and it continues to manifest and thereby bringing about a vicious circle of effects in the various activities in the community thereby aggravating the condition after each cycle thus making the problems of the orphans, widows, and vulnerable children highly crucial; and coupled by the fact that the village of Kimbi has the highest number of orphans/vulnerable children in the country caused by the Lake Nyos Disaster; FOMCAM after an intensive need assessment of the orphans and their living condition with foster parents – mostly aged grandmothers/fathers in August 2016 decided as follows:
a). Identify 10 most vulnerable orphan children for
sponsorship in September 2016 depending on income
raised.
b). Carryout home base visits to access the living
conditions, health, hygiene and sanitation of the
orphans.
c). Contact school administrators/head teachers
to obtain information on tuition, book list, and other
expenses before a child gets enrolled in a school.
d). Fundraise to support orphan children selected during
contact/homebased visits.
e). Create awareness on the plight/rights of the orphans
and widows in the community and to challenge the
community rulers to take positive and innovative
actions towards assisting them.
f). Act as a mediator between the community,
volunteers and donors to assist the orphan children
achieve their life goals as well as quality education.
g). Solicit the services of a consultant for this purpose.
Outcomes/IMPACT
a).02 (two) workshops organised and attended by foster parents, women groups, traditional rulers, traditional council members, notables, sub chiefs, IMAMS, teachers, municipals counsellors, sales men, orphan children and FOMCAM staff in the Fon’s palace of Kimbi Village.
Nji Fany is in great need of cloths/shoes/food/fees
b).Homebased visits and need assessment carried out by consultant/Director FOMCAM revealed 30 desperate orphan vulnerable children and their foster parents living under very deplorable conditions.
c).03 Primary/Nursery School head teachers (GS Kimbi, GS Kimata, GNPS Kimbi) and the principal of GTC Kimbi were contacted and school requirements for the orphans obtained.

d).FOMCAM’s partnership with Plan International Cameroon benefited 105 (80leaves Exercise books), 42 pencils, and 42 pens as a token to support the orphan children in Kimbi.
e).In August and September 2016, FOMCAM fundraised 762,100FCFA (seven hundred sixty two thousand one hundred francs CFA) from Individuals (Victoria Beylouni, Assaba Prudencia, Ekei Che Tschonghongei, and Meh Lydwina) enabled FOMCAM pay tuition/books to 30 orphans.
f).FOMCAM purchased and transported educational materials to Kimbi in September, 2016 to her beneficiaries.

j). In appreciation of the philanthropic gesture of FOMCAM to the orphan children, in the presence of the Fon of Kimbi, the foster parents of the beneficiaries overwhelmingly presented a life Cock to the Director of FOMCAM as a blessing and thank you for giving a future through education to the 30 orphan and vulnerable children.
k). Asking about sanitary materials, 48% of the young orphan vulnerable children in secondary school already experiencing menstrual bite, use pieces of used cloths (sometimes dirty) instead of good quality sanitary materials to pad themselves during menstrual bite – a risk of easily being infected. A habit; they say was copied from their seniors.
Way Forward
a).Engage in fundraising inorder to completely address the problem of inadequate care for the orphans/vulnerable children whose parents did not leave any inheritance that could assist them. b).Empower the widows and foster parents through innovative programs that will help them gain financial access/independence as a means to eradicate the prevalence poverty in Kimbi village.
c).Eradicate poverty by improving and scaling-up economic productivity through the promotion of sustainable self-help development initiatives in the community members.
Conclusion
The beneficiaries of the 2015/2016 school year through FOMCAM’s child sponsorship programme represent less than 10% of the total number of orphan vulnerable children (OVC) identified in Kimbi Village in August 2016; thus a glimpse of the impact this would have created if all OVC’s were assisted.
We wish to thank our partners; Plan International Cameroon, Victoria Beylouni, Assaba Prudencia, Ekei Che Tschonghongei, Meh Lydwina and the directors of FOMCAM for enabling us pay tuition to 30 orphans instead of the planned 10 through their material and financial support.
We wish to invite families, individuals, volunteers and donor organizations to join us to eradicate the prevalence of poverty in Kimbi Village by educating the orphans in one hand and empowering the widows and foster parents on the other hand gain access to financial independence. This will go a long way to eradicate poverty as well as improve on the standard of living of the community.
